I was unexpectedly blown away by Donnelly’s novel Step Sister. It’s was darker, deeper, and more inspiring that I expected!

An alternative spin on a classic fairytale Donnelly explores the fate of Cinderella’s step sisters; in particular Isabelle.

The story is extremely empowering and the characters are relatable and well developed. The main protagonist Isabelle is extremely well written and as the reader you are immediately invested in her and her quest.

The prose flows well and the short chapters suit this story down to the ground. Swapping between different characters perspectives really added to the intrigue and pace of the novel.

This book was full of positivity for the human race and what we can achieve when we set our minds to it and follow our hearts. It was also a real feminist story showing that girls can do just as much as men and you don’t have to be considered “pretty” to become someone important.

Isabelle is a real modern day heroine (despite the historic setting of the novel) and I would recommend this book to all women but especially teenage girls as I feel the moral of Donnelly’s story is one they need to hear.
