I Expected More

I don't really know what I was expecting for this book - adventure, perhaps some action. I thought that possibly Isabelle was going to take on the role of a warrior knight or prince-like figure, but instead I only got to over half of the book and nothing exciting had happened, so I gave up. Whether the plot does become more action-based I don't know, but really, this was just a display of Isabelle's misfortune, and while it's clear that she has strength to endure all she does, I was hoping she would defy stereotypes and become an action hero, rather than just be a girl about to give up who needs chance (who's also portrayed as male) rather than fate (who's female - interesting gender roles playing in there, the catty female villain vs. the male 'hero' or 'saviour' figure) to save her from her terrible life and future.

Overall, not my cup of tea and I was disappointed. I suppose the synopsis was so vague that I'd gone in expecting more, and the book hadn't reached the full potential or given the great message that it could've done.
