The story is told from the point of view of the murderer and is set on an island to increase the suspense. It is about a group of high school students who have just graduated and who have gone to Sparrow island to celebrate before they go to college in the autumn. The students are clearly rich and privileged but one of them has already planned the murder as this student has taken a knife with them on the trip. We find out in the prologue who is the victim but not why he is going to be murdered or by whom. It is a modern read.
