Suddenly a Murder is a YA mystery novel following Izzy Morales and 5 her prep school friends on a graduation trip to a remote island. Their 1920 themed getaway quickly turns sour when one of the friends ends up murdered, her best friends boyfriend.

While the premise was interesting, the novel felt really flat to me. The crux of the story didn’t have as much impact as I would have liked, given that we had been teased about the idea of a big secret the entire time. Majority of the characters felt quite two dimensional and with no real depth, even our main character Izzy. Her friendship with Kassidy was sweet and somewhat fleshed out but the ending felt very abrupt. Ultimately, I wished there was fewer flashbacks.

We do have some diversity, and I would have really liked more from Ellison as he was by far the most interesting character, along with Marlowe.
