I’m surprised at how much I actually liked this preview.
I wouldn’t normally pick up a war based book but actually the author surprised me with the main characters internal dialogue describing her first experiences of Britain.
The descriptions and dialogue of other characters made me smile and think how accurate Britain could appear to a stranger. The mispronunciation of the children’s names and naivety of the characters changing them or refusing to say them at all was perfectly captured by the authors choice of words.
Initially I thought ‘Summerland’ was another name for Britain, maybe it was supposed to appear to be muddled up in translation, but actually it’s the house ‘Bridget’ was to arrive at.
I’ll definitely continue with this read.
