The cover gives little away other than suggesting it’s historical fiction, which is usually a winner with me!
However the opening chapters build some thought provoking details, such as the significance of the single glove, which are certainly intriguing.
The narrator’s voice is instantly authentic, as is her description of the traumatised children she is travelling with. The hints at the horrors they have experienced contrast well with the harassed but benign attitude of the English characters.
