This was a very short book that certainly packed a punch.
We follow fifteen-year-old Brigitta, a Jewish refugee who arrives in England through the Red Cross after WWII. Her most treasured possession is a worn grey glove.
There's a lot of symbolism present and I enjoyed exploring it all. Through food and music, we really get a grasp of who the characters are and what role they play in the story. I especially enjoyed some of the side characters.
Many twists and turns, especially at the very end. Looking back, there were a lot of breadcrumbs left behind that led to that unexpected but well-constructed outcome. However, it was a bit rushed and could have been explored further if given a few extra pages, in my opinion.
I also felt there were some historical inconsistencies about this time period (1946) as well as some difficult subjects that could have been handled in a way to create a bigger impact in the reader. However, I understand it would have been difficult to do that and still keep it YA.
There was a hint of magical realism to it, as well as paranormal vibes, that really made the book rather unique and clever. But I won't say more for fear of spoiling anyone - just give it a go!
