Set just after WWII, Brigitta Iguel embarks on a journey to find some long-awaited answers. After breaking free from the Red Cross, Brigitta arrives at Summerland Hall: the destination she hopes will solve the mysteries that have haunted her throughout the war. The story follows the trials and tribulations she encounters as an Austrian refugee, dropped in the middle of a war-ravaged country, where the locals aren’t too welcoming of foreigners.
A short and easy to read text, Summerland dives into the issues faced after the war. As a character, Brigitta seems quite stand-offish but due to her heart-breaking backstory it is easy to warm to her and route for her to succeed.
There are some fairly complex themes running through the book and emotions often run very high – one moment in particular had me feeling especially emotional. I did start to suspect the major twist fairly early on but the narrative style only enhanced the journey to the final reveal.
My favourite part of the whole novel? The chapter titles! Who wouldn’t want to read a chapter with the titles Bacon Butties, Sherry Trifle or Sloe Gin?
Overall, a very enjoyable read which focuses on a different aspect of WWII.
