Good Writing Style

The book follows Brigitta as they try to find out why their mother was not given refuge by a family friend before the war started.
The book is well written and the voice of the character is clear. The ending of the book takes a twist and while I liked the ending, it made the writing style seem too childish by the end of the book, though this may have been intentional on the author's part, as Brigitta did not go to school during the war.
There are ghosts in the book, though they do not seem to have much development to the plot and what they do bring to the plot could be explained by other means, and taking the ghosts out of the story would have taken away nothing from the story. I can only think that they were there as it was set in 1946, when to an imaginative child it would seem as if there were suddenly more ghosts than there used to be in the world.
The story is good and the characters are clearly defined, I was just confused by the writing style towards the end of the book.
