Summerland paints a vivid picture of life for post war refugees who travelled to England. Lucy Adlington's passion for detail, particularly around the wartime clothing, adds authenticity and depth to the Yorkshire setting. Her hero, Brigitta, is surrounded by mystery and clues to her identity and purpose are drip fed to the reader, leaving you desperate to read further and uncover the true meaning behind her trip to Summerland Hall. There is a lot to love about the book; the character of Sophie Rover is a delight and acts in contrast to some of the darker themes. The ending is surprising and, after investing so much into the characters, feels appropriate. There is so much more to be explored in the story, particularly linked to Joe, whose story feels a little rushed to conclusion. Overall, a really gripping read.
