Summerland is about belonging, about the journey that everyone of us, in one way or another, do to understand who we really are and where we are from.

We follow a young girl who escaped a bombed Berlin after the end of the second world war and found a way to move to the UK. She has a clear destination in mind and she reaches it. But once there, her own fears as well as all the misconceptions and prejudices of other fellow villagers get in her way.

She walks through ghosts of the past and uncertainties about her future. She meets friends and mentors. People, in this novel, do not stop surprising and are as dynamic as people in fact are.

The characters are thick (as in, they are not transparent) and the narrative style is engaging. The idea of having chapters named after traditional English dishes is a great idea.

Book recommended for a light but not stupid read. You will like this book if you like character-driven novels with a focus on inner feelings and emotions.
