Simple Story Well Told
No surprises in the plot. It trips along as you would expect and the twist in the tale is sign posted much too early.
I felt the book was too simplistic with the characters being obvious and stereotypical. I am too young to have lived through the second world war but did not feel transported into the era by the descriptions of the book. It treated the crisis a little too lightly with the heroine passing through and experiencing really quite horrendous situations in a seemingly dispassionate way.
The house at the centre of the plot becomes a poor mans Downton Abby with the cook and maid being very two dimensional.
Having said that the book is an easy read and would be a good way to pass a day on the beach.
