This was a beautifully written and flowing story so well imagined that it really drew me in and engaged my sympathies for the young victim of persecution at its centre.
It also portrayed convincingly how ordinary people could do terrible things, so that the phrase "it could never happen here" repeated by the English characters rang increasingly hollow.
The mystery was well sustained and made for a satisfying reveal but I felt the end of the novel was a little too pat, with some developments lacking credibility.
I suspect that reading this book would have been a rather different experience had I read the previous novel by Lucy Adlington that featured some of the same characters, so would recommend considering getting hold of The Red Ribbon first.
