This post-war tale of a refugee searching for family connections in a small English town was warming and enjoyable to read. I loved the food connections (each chapter is named after a particular dish) and felt that the characters were well-developed, from the housekeeper to the lead character of Brigitta. It was only towards the very end that I realised the twist (no spoilers here). Ultimately the book was about the risks of keeping secrets and what we all choose to keep hidden, before revealing our true selves. Only slight criticism is that occasionally some of the phrases spoken sounds more American and modern than true to the time, but otherwise I really enjoyed this book. It was a cosy read for autumn.
