I was really looking forward to this book as I like to read books similar to this style of writing, being historical drama.
I didn't just like this book ... I loved it!
From the first couple of chapters I was immediately drawn into the story and the characters persona and emotions. Coming from Europe into England after the war, I could really picture the scenes that could be expected and found these to be described and written so well.
The characters within the book you could gather an image of and I especially liked Mrs Rover and her sense of pride loyalty she shows. Im glad Mrs Biggs' character left the way she did, as I did not like her and thought she was written well.
The story of this book was written well and I especially liked that the main character kept going back in time, as this gave the reader an understanding of them and how they came to be. I enjoyed the twist towards the end of the book and completely did not expect it, being shocked at how the main character completly changes. This change of character allowed for a different kind of relationship to form with Joe and this is something that would not have been highlighted or looked upon as normal at the time.
I like the way in which each chapter was named after a certain English dish that featured within that chapter and had my mouth watering on a few occasions.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and give it 5 stars.
