I am hopeful that this book will settle down in to a compelling narrative. Unfortunately, the opening chapters provided here are disjointed and it feels a little "skippy" with the layout.

Whilst the brief history of modern day execution methods utilised in various states is interesting and provides a good background for the subject matter, I do feel that this would have been better placed as an addendum at the end of the book or as the introduction rather than the second chapter. By the time we reach the third chapter we have had the introduction with Richard Glossip in a monitored, solitary confinement cell for the past 50 days; a precis of the crime(s) committed and an introduction to the main accused and a potted history of legal executon.

Whilst this is a genre that I enjoy I do tend to prefer a narrative flow to be present and, although, well written, this just does not seem to be present at thsi early stage.
