This is a remarkable book telling the true story of Richard Glossip who was convicted of murder in 1997 in Oklahoma. He didn’t murder anybody, and the prosecution confirmed that, but the murderer, Justin Sneed, claimed that Richard Glossip asked him to murder Barry Van Treese for money and his story was accepted by the police (who actually put the idea into Sneed’s head) and thus Richard’s nightmare began. He was convicted of the crime, even though there was no evidence of this other than Sneed’s allegations, and was not helped in any way by an incompetent lawyer defending him. Sneed was given a life sentence and Glossip was given a death sentence.

I will hold my hands up and confirm that I am totally against the death penalty as I find the idea totally abhorrent and, in my view, this book just reinforces that opinion. It also leaves me amazed at the madness and inequality that is the American justice system.

I would urge anyone to read this book. It is a very balanced view I feel and also pays the utmost respect to the victim and indeed does not overlook Glossip’s guilt as an accessory after the fact for not informing the police when Sneed told him that he had killed Barry Van Treese.

I found this book to be an excellent, informative and fair read and am glad I got to read it.
