The death penalty is one of those ethical debates that pops up from time to time. General consensus being those that are opposed feel it is against these prisoners human rights, especially as more often than not the execution is painful and not necessarily as quick as officials would have you believe as the author gives examples. The change in methods also shows how public opinion has changed over the years. Attempting to make the process less barbaric and restricting who can be there to see the prisoner take their last breaths unlike a little over half a century ago where such affairs would be very public indeed, almost entertainment to some.

On the flip side there is those who feel it is just for those considered to quote the author ‘the worst of the worse’ to be put to death less humanely than we would a pet. The whole an eye for an eye debate though as shown those who do not necessarily commit murder themselves also get handed the death penalty. Famously Charles Manson being one such case though he was suspected of murdering and certainly manipulating others to do his dirty work.

It is up to personal opinion whether those who conspire to murder but do not commit the act themselves are just as bad as or worse than the perpetrator(s). Overall from the extract and looking at chapter titles it appears this book will leave the reader with much to mull over on what is and will continue to be a controversial subject.
