It's been a long time coming this book and it was highly recommended to me before I got around to it, so I had quite high expectations for it. While it wasn't the best thriller / mystery I've ever read, I did end up really enjoying this one!
I don't really like police procedurals, and I had no idea this book was going to be one until I began reading, but it wasn't your average procedural novel. While it has dark themes and a main character carrying some heavy baggage, it was also very witty and this takes away from the bleakness sometimes.
Our main character Cat was an interesting character to follow through the story. Honestly, she wasn't particularly unique - police officer with baggage, reflects her feelings onto dry wit and sarcasm, daddy issues - but at least she was fun and you could enjoy getting to know her.
Side characters of the story were a bit nothingy and I doubt I'll remember them in a months time, but during the story they added this and that to progress the plot slightly.
I am a little disappointed by the lack of dad drama in this. The whole synopsis focuses itself around Cat's dad being super suspicious but the actual book doesn't hugely focus on this. That's not to say it isn't without its dad drama, but there was far less than I had envisioned there being. That being said, the story in this book was good. Not the best mystery I've ever read but was twisty enough to keep you on your toes. I hadn't managed to guess the ending myself, but once the reveal does happen, there's still a good number of pages in the book left, so I guessed what came after.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. It was fun and easy to read, which is always good when you're slipping in and out of a reading slump. It was fast paced enough to keep my entertained and kept my attention even though it had its cliches. I'll definitely read another book by Frear!
