This book quickly introduces you to the family of Cat giving you a good sense of the dynamics between them. You can immediately sense the friction between her parents and her feelings towards her brother. It is clear however that she has a close relationship with her sister. The time in which the story is set is very relatable if you are a 90s child (like myself), there are many references to things such as the Spice Girls and Gareth Gates.
I particularly like the way that from the start we know there is something suspicious about Cat's father and she refers to this several times within the first two chapters, which automatically gets your brain ticking and thinking about what her Dad did and why.
It's also really interesting to read that despite whatever Cat may have witnessed as a child (we do not know what this is yet but can speculate that it links to the disappearance of a young girl) that she has gone on to work for a murder investigation team - is this because of what she witnessed as a child?
This was a captivating read and I'm excited to read the rest of the book!
