This is a beautifully illustrated book, where each page is packed, (and I mean packed), full of colour and diagrams which are annotated with an abundance of facts about food from around the world. There are timelines to explain the history of the development of agriculture, and the discovery of different foods, while the cuisine of individual countries are highlighted, and there are recipes originating from each place.

Obviously it is aimed at children, but there is so much interesting information in it, that this book could appeal to anyone with an interest in food really. As mentioned, there are plenty of recipes from around the world for the reader to try out, and they should help to expand the palate of any curious child. Or adult.

If there is one minor disappointment, it's that the book is originally Polish, and, while the translation is excellent, the UK is not one of the highlighted countries, so there's no Cornish pasties, haggis, toad-in-the-hole, chicken tikka massala or, em, deep fried Mars Bar. But that's really splitting hairs as the main focus is obviously on broadening the boundaries of the palate, and on that criterium this book, (which was far more engaging than I expected), succeeds in spades.

Bon Appetit!
