I always seem to buy a lot of books based on their covers, and this book would definitely cause me to pick it up and read the synopsis on the back. I love books set in Tudor or Elizabethan times (well, pretty much anything medieval or indeed, in the past!), and this really appeals to me. Already in the short extract, we get a real feel of the times: the sights and smells of London at that time, and especially the sights and smells of a dissection room! The main character seems to be a conscientious doctor who wants to do the right thing. I’m a big fan of the Shardlake series, and this is similar in that someone is investigating a death (a Doctor here, a lawyer with Shardlake), and takes his job seriously. I would very much like to read the rest of this book to see how the story and the character develops, and how his wife has fared in childbirth (that’s a bit of a cliffhanger to end on with the excerpt!!).
