A vivid and engrossing historical novel
I do not usually read historical fiction but the description for The Angel's Mark sounded interesting so I thought I would give it a try.
The Angel's Mark had me hooked from the start and flowed effortlessly from chapter to chapter. It is clear that the author spent a considerable amount of time researching life in Elizabethan London prior to writing this novel and he manages to present his findings in a clear, readable and realistic way. The book is wonderfully rich in historical detail and the vivid descriptions made me feel like I was right there in the story.
The characters were very believable and I could not help but warm to several of them. However, I felt that there were too many characters and it was hard to keep track of them all at times. Despite that minor criticism, I enjoyed this book much more than I thought I would and it gave me an excellent insight into the fascinating and sometimes gruesome period in which the story is set.
I would recommend The Angel's Mark to anyone who is interested in historical fiction, murder mysteries and/or the history of medicine and I look forward to reading more books by this author.
