I do love a historical mystery and this really hit the mark. I have a number of favourite historical series and this easily slips in beside them. I was incredibly impressed with the characterisation and the plot but it was the historical detail and the seemingly effortless way it formed the story that really thrilled. To see our past in all it's cruelty and to understand the limitations religious fanaticism forced upon those unfortunate enough to be caught in it's spotlight was eye opening to say the least. More than once I thanked my lucky stars I wasn't born 500 years ago. As for the plot, well, I'm normally quite adept at spotting an up coming twist but I honestly did not work out what was going on until the characters did. I do admire a great writer and I think S. W. Perry is extremely talented. I can't wait to read more in the future.
