I was looking forward so much to reading The Angels Mark , but I found the characters extremely unlikeable . The plot was so incredibly boring that I abandoned the book half way through !
However before reaching this point The Angels Mark is awash with a wonderful wealth of historic detail , showing what life would have been like for the populace of London in Elizabethan times . The details are so richly described that you can almost smell the stench of the putrid River Thames !
Set in the year 1590 , towards the end of the Queen's reign people see Catholic heretics and Spanish spies everywhere . Nicholas Shelby is a physician who unwillingly becomes involved in trying to solve a murder nobody is interested in. When a small boy is pulled from the Thames only Nicholas notices a strange mark on the boys left leg . It is the sign of an inverted cross .
Only days later another body is found bearing the same mark . Can Nicholas find out who is killing the undesirables of London or will he himself face danger ?
