Reading this book truly was a journey for me. I went from disliking to liking to disinterested multiple times, which oddly gives me hope for this author as it's a debut. There were elements of this book like I enjoyed, particularly when we were getting to know our love interests and the adventures they would go on. Unfortunately for me that wasn't enough for me to be fully invested in the plot, it has an interesting premise and is clearly designed to spark conversations around feminism, work culture, and the ideal of a perfect match however often I found these conversations to be too on the nose and almost expected.
The last half of the book was exactly how I expected it to go, which is fine if you are looking for an easy read but the length and writing style of this made it hard to keep going. I would say that the writing style and editing of this book should have been worked on more and that isn't necessarily the fault of the author but her team. The pacing henceforth wasn't as steady as I would have wished, but these elements of writing craft come with time and experience so I do still have hope for her future work.
That being said Ursula as a main character was genuinely just insufferable for me, maybe I just didn't relate to her but it wasn't simply her personality but the strange realm of feminism she occupied. I couldn't tell if this book was meant to be empowering or comical over-exaggeration but in the end it just felt a little out of touch for me. Once again bringing us back to lack of nuance.
That being said the reading experience of this book did make me look at feminism and gender in corporate spaces differently, and although that may not have been the intention I am still grateful that this book sparked those conversations within me.
