Intriguing concept

Can a mysterious, super-sophisticated matchmaking service that relies on a complex series of emotional, psychological and physiological assessments anticipate the ups and downs of human relationships and guarantee that a couple will still be together 18 months later? That is the concept behind The Arc, which follows Ursula and Rafael as they put all their trust into this new experience. They soon find themselves falling in love and agreeing on everything, but then realise that not everything in a relationship is predictable when they have their first disagreement.

The chapters are concise and are marked by dates and times, so the story reads more like a series of diary entries following therapy sessions, while the brightly-coloured front cover with fresh-faced lovers may draw in a young adult audience despite the main protagonists being in early middle age. The idea that you only get one shot at The Arc, and the consequences which follow from that, also makes for an intriguing storyline, but some of the details - such as Ursula vomiting during her latest awful first date - are quite graphic if not vulgar.
