The Art of Death is the debut novel by David Fennell and it is a promising start to what will hopefully become an excellent crime series.

The main character Detective Inspector Grace Archer who’s back story is cleverly used by the author to propel the main storyline along whilst providing scope for further revelations in the future.

Archer is supported by Detective Sergeant Harry Quinn who is also a well drawn character again with a back story that has only been partially revealed.

The killer is different from the usual run of the mill ones and the author definitely created an interesting character

The book moves along at a decent pace and kept this reader flicking the pages on.

My only slight reservation was the lack of time the two lead characters spent at crime scenes and the lack of management / oversight however these are minor quibbles and don’t detract from what is a promising debut
