It’s a book about a spy who goes on assignments to interesting European historical places, well written, but with some scarcity in the descriptions. This could be good, or it could just skim the surface of a rich historical period.

This should be my type of read, historically taking the reader to Kathrine the Great's St Petersburg, then onwards to the French revolution. The best part is the strong female protagonist, she spys and kills a muscular man, this is the strong part of this extract. We don’t see this type of character enough.

I found pace was too fast, the lady hero sorted out some illegal slavery, got her French revolutionary out of Russia. Then she was back in England, discussing her mixed racial heritage with her Lord Dad's mates at his wedding. Next she was outside of Whitehall talking with a toothless pea fella, who let her into the secret spy lair, which was under a pea-wagon cloth gateway. Come on, it’s 39 pages, I would have liked to have read a more thorough description of Katherine the Great's St Petersburg, I've been there and I couldn’t imagine myself there from the text. The description of the toothless gent was good though, but it was the locations that were lacking the detail to help you to imagine what it was like in those days.

This could be a good start, but I would like to see detail added. What would get 5 stars for a great French (or French/English) historical read? Les Miserables or A Tale of Two Cities, both immersing you in the time, place and culture. I offer 3 stars for originality in bringing something new to this era.
