From reading the first few chapters, I can already tell it has all the plot elements I love in coming of age and contemporary fiction. The setting of the book, as well as the relationships between the narrator and her parents remind me a bit of ‘Where The Crawdads Sing‘. I am a sucker for a lazy beach town setting and loved the part where she rode her new bike along the promenade, past her friend working, up to the ridge. Her friendship with the boys and the spirituality element gave me ‘The Raven Boys‘ vibes. I love the characters fortune telling skills but I appreciate how the writer acknowledges it is also a burden. Then the strange lights offers the same anticipation and uncertainty as Tommy Wallach’s ‘We All Looked Up’. I’m excited to read more and see how those themes intertwine with one another and find out more about the mysterious lights - whether they are the omen she believes them to be or something else entirely!
