This story follows a time in Natasha’s, our narrator, life. More specifically it is set in her 15th year, and what occurs during this time in her life. Her mother, the beautiful bohemian Elizabeth, is also a significant character in this story as we follow the way their close but unique relationship as mother and daughter deals with the effects of what happens in an all too peculiar summer. As obscure blue lights appear one time in the sky, flocks of people come to town in wonder of the mystery as to what they were, but tragedy strikes, and Natasha finds herself in the middle of it.
The writing style in beautiful and it is the first time I have read anything by Rachel Donohue but now plan to follow up with some of her other work. As someone who loves to visualise the story I found this writing so refreshing to get to read, the stunning way that the town is describes, as well the house of the cliff and the characters themselves made the perfect picture and feel of the atmosphere and personalities.
I loved being constantly suspicious of what was happening and wondering what each event would do to the already changing dynamic between Natasha and Elizabeth. Following the change of circumstances throughout the book made every part a page turner and I would recommend this book to anyone who loves contemporary fiction. A read I have thoroughly enjoyed and can’t wait to pass onto friends.
