I loved this book. It's brilliantly atmospheric, evoking a hot summer in a seaside town. The oppressive heat lending itself to the brooding, contemplative mood of the story. Characters are drawn lightly, but so well that they really come to life in your mind's eye. Natasha, at 15, has all the self absorption and awkwardness of adolescence, made more complex by her gift for foretelling the future. Her friendship with Marcus is so evocative of those early beginnings of romantic and sexual feelings without yet knowing what they are. Her life, with her beautiful and eccentric mother adds another interesting dimension.

The story centres around the strange events during this particular summer. Mysterious lights that Natasha understands to be a warning and the subsequent disappearance of her friend. The lights and Natasha's warnings bring interest from outside. The impact on the community and on Natasha, as the various adults become involved, is compelling reading.
The book isn't a fast paced page turner. It is subtle and beautifully written. I really recommend it.
