This book was an emotional rollercoaster. It follows Natasha, a young woman who is struggling with her own identity. She has spent her entire life pretending to be a "normal girl," despite the fact that she is very special. Natasha has foreboding visions of the future, but no one in her life accepts her for them, and she suppresses them until the summer she turns fifteen. We can tell right away that this isn't a happy-ending story, and there are so many hidden clues that older Natasha discreetly gives readers, sometimes addressing us directly, which makes this book even more unique. The subtle hints to what is going to happen only left me with more questions, and many things remain a mystery even now, at the end.
We never learn the name of the town or what the strange lights in the sky were; all we know is what people saw them as. It's very open to interpretation, which I like because everyone can get something different out of it, but it also feels like a life lesson at the same time. I believe it also deals well with mental issues; I believe it also deals with mental issues very well; there is more to the story than meets the eye. We get to see inside Natasha's mind and the minds of others thanks to her psychic abilities, and we learn that what appears to be a blessing at first may turn out very differently, and that things are not always as they appear. It is hauntingly beautiful despite dealing with grief, regret, loss, and a strange, melancholy nostalgia. It's something I'll remember for a long time.
