This book opens to a boiling hot summer in a seaside town. Natasha is 15 and it's the time when her best friend could be more than just a friend if she'd like. But then the lights appear. Blue sparkling lights hover above the cliffs. To most people they are a hoax, proof of alien life or a religious vision. To Natasha, who has always been able to see things that others can't, they are a bad omen. Death is coming and life will never be the same.
I really enjoyed this book. You can feel the atmosphere of the red hot summer, and being a resident of a seaside tourist town. Natasha and her mother are both revered and outcast in the town, which has the effect of always keeping you on edge. I really felt for Natasha and wished her visions would go away so that she could concentrate on being a teenager. I wanted her mother to step up, and I wanted her to acknowledge how she truly felt about her best friend Marcus. Sadly this book has no happy endings. I'd have loved to find out more about adult Natasha's life, but I guess that would be a whole separate book. I'm definitely going to look out for Rachel Donohue's other works.
