Emotional from the word go

I was gripped from the first paragraph where Nuri describes his wife as if she is a stranger. I instantly feel compassion for the poor woman who has obviously lost a large part of herself.
I get the impression that they have family that they have been separated from. I can't wait to see how this unfolds!
p.s the authors descriptive writing is beautiful!
