I think that the blurb gave a very good summary of the basic plot of this novel. The cover is also very beautiful. After reading the extract, and looking closely at the cover I did notice something. The bee. Bees do seem to appear a lot in this novel and they do have significance. And I’m thinking that the bees might be a metaphor, for what I do not know as I’ve not read enough. But they might be a metaphor for peace or new beginnings.
The extract was the background story of the main character, and gave us a lot of insight into his wife.
The writing style used in this novel is simply beautiful. It describes everything so perfectly and I could compare it to Afra’s paintings, lively and moving. The language and words used were sometimes complicated and a bit difficult to understand but that’s what gave this novel the extra ‘oomph’.
From the very beginning, we could tell that the characters had depth. We learn so much about them simply from their actions and words. I would also say this novel is very eye-opening to cultures and traditions that I’m not familiar with, but I’m glad to learn about.
Very curious to learn more about Afra and how she lost her sight.
