This was a very moving read, Christy Lefteri writes beautifully about Nuri and Afra, Syrian migrants fleeing the war in their country to seek asylum to England. Their son was killed by a bomb and it had caused Afra to lose her sight so Nuri must protect and lead his wife on this treacherous journey. Nuri goes back and forth from the present to the past where he reflects on his life as a successful Beekeeper and the events that led them to leaving their home.

I know a lot of people have rated this book really highly but unfortunately for me, although a lovely book, it didn't quite live up to the hype. I found it really hard to get into and I found parts quite boring and unnecessary. I know this is not meant to be an action packed book, its the message behind the story that's most important but I just wanted a bit more from it and I found some parts dragging. The last 100 pages were much better as their journey was coming to an end and some of the characters were truly wonderful! Lefteri knows how to make people come alive in your mind. I did find the beekeeping aspect of it very fascinating too as I have always loved bees. O

Overall I would recommend this book, it is a very meaningful book but it is a slow burner so be prepared for that.
