This book was profound. And utterly beautiful. And equally hard hitting. A pure whirlwind of emotions, and I can safely say it’s probably one of the best books I’ve read so far this year.
This is the story of Nuri, a Beekeeper, and his wife Afra, an artist. Both residents of the Syrian city of Aleppo, and living a modest but happy life. Until the world around them begins to shatter, the city is plagued by war and violence - and they’re forced to flee. To seek asylum. But where? Afra has been blinded by some of the sights she has witnessed prior to fleeing Aleppo - she is vulnerable, they both are. This is their story.
This book is captivating, courageous and very thought provoking. I feel as if my eyes have been opened to a small slither of the horrors that refugees face in their plight for safety. I forged a very strong bond with Nuri throughout this story, and I fear I will miss him. The character development is good...they meet some interesting characters of their journey, and the events which unfold range from devastating to miraculous.
Afra’s blindness teaches us all a lesson - the importance of appreciating the little things in life, the strength of love, the importance of companionship and the courage to seek change. She is a mysterious character in someways, but an incredibly strong woman, who you only grow to respect more as the story unfolds.
This book encompasses a lot of themes, therefore I think that everyone can enjoy and take something from this book. Read it. You won’t be sorry!
