An inspiring tale of struggle and determination
This is a story about a family who’ve been broken and ruined by the conflict in Syria. We meet Nuri and his wife Afra while they live in prosperity but it’s clear that things take a turn for the worse. We watch them journey through Europe to get to safety in England.
It’s a novel that’s easy to read and simple to understand (a great start for beginners). It takes a while to get to grips with the writing style as it switches between a ‘before’ and a ‘now’ but I love that it shows a connection even though so much has changed for the characters.
The book deals with grief and the consequences when Nuri and Afra lose their son as well as Afra’s sight.
Again, a very beautiful novel which illustrates the importance of family and the help of people around us. It’s clear the author has done their research and I enjoyed it a lot as it really got me thinking about the lives of people leaving everything behind for a better life.
