This is a moving and powerful book, beautifully written and truly impactful. I think that it's power lies in that it shows the vast and deep impact of war and displacement. I grew to love all the characters so quickly, and was definitely heartbroken at points! The writing is lovely and I really enjoyed the descriptions of Syria as more than just a warzone, but as a country with beauty. The parallel with beekeeping was especially interesting and I was thrilled to find it was based on a true story. I think so often we can dehumanise refugees because their lives and the scandal around them is all over the papers, but this book brings things back to where they should be. It shows that refugees are just like us all, sure they might have a different culture and be from a different country but they have families and dreams and hopes like everyone else.
