This is the bitter sweet story of Nuri and Afra, refugees from the Syrian city of Aleppo trying to get to England to be reunited with Nuri’s cousin, Mustapha. War destroys no raise blissful life as a beekeeper and Afra’s as an artist And we need them on various stages of the arduous journey as they deal with the loss of their son and of a chance-met boy Mohammed. Afra has lost her sight, and Nuri’s mental health lies in the balance. They meet problems, dangers and some kindnesses. Books like this ought to be required reading for those who believe that people flee from their countries and embark upon journeys on a whim. I won’t spoil by saying whether or not they make it to the UK but this is a heartfelt and memorable story written by a women whose parents were themselves refugees from Cyprus and utilising her own experience volunteering at a refugee camp in Athens
