Wow, what a powerful and haunting read!

The Beekeeper of Aleppo is a beautifully written love story. It tells us of the love one Syrian couple have for each other, for their son and for their broken Syria. It is about friendship family and how hope in the most horrific of circumstances manages to find a way.

I read this book in one sitting, I couldn’t put it down. The authour has been on the front line in refugee camps and her first hand contact with the people that the war in Syria has displaced is clear on every page. She writes with passion, feeling and understanding. She writes beautifully.

Nuri and his cousin Mustafa were beekeepers in Aleppo, they had so much care and time for their bees, this passion and care and almost mindfulness seems to pull through the whole book. In the darkest hell, while sleeping rough in a park in Athens, Nuri finds comfort in the hum of bees in his mind. One of the themes that runs through the book is collaboration, something the bees do well. There are times when we’re reminded that bees are better at collaborating than humans, but there is always hope.

Do read this book, it’s wonderful and it’s important.

I was provided with a free copy of this book by readers first for an honest review, all opinions are my own.
