This book was so interesting and told the story of how two family’s are separated fleeing the war in Aleppo. The characters they meet along the way are diverse and the journey they find themselves on to the U.K. is heartbreaking.

However I did find the story quite slow and on some chapters I was a little bit bored. It was very descriptive, which was good but I felt sometimes it was a little bit over the top. I found some parts difficult to engage with as the story wasn’t very relatable but it was powerful and thought provoking nevertheless.

The flasbacks Nuri has seem a little bit random and I thought the storyline about the little boy Mohammed was too obvious for it to have any great impact. The flashback of his wife getting raped was also hard to read.

I lacked empathy with the characters and I just found them too difficult to connect with to enjoy the story
