The Beekeeper of Aleppo is the must read of 2021. Beautifully written it takes you on a journey of heartbreak and hope. It tells the heart-rending story of Nuri, a beekeeper and his wife Afra, an artist, living in war torn Syria.
The story begins before the start of the civil war. As war breaks out living conditions worsen , violence erupts and people live in daily fear for their lives. The situation quickly deteriorates and fearing for their safety Nuri and his wife make the heart wrenching decision to flee Syria.
They make the treacherous journey from Syria across Turkey and Greece with the hope of finally reaching the United Kingdom, where they hope to be reunited with their cousin.
The story takes you on an emotional roll coaster but brings home the sad reality that many many people have had to make this perilous journey risking their lives for a better life.
This is an emotional read that left me in tears on more than one occasion. However, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you only read one book in 2021 make it The Beekeeper of Aleppo.
