This is the standard tale of feisty poor girl going through innumerable hardships before coming "good"; much in the frame of Catherine Cookson and Josephine Cox. There is nothing at all wrong with that though, somehow they help you put your own troubles in to perspective as you gasp, sigh and maybe even wipe away a tear as things go from bad to worse to disastrous.

Not a favoured genre of mine but I've read quite a few and they can be very enjoyable and this one actually looks to be moving it that direction. Although Maisie seems to be my preferred character - got to love the selfish sister haven't you?
