Rosie Goodwin was a new author to me, but I can honestly say this won't be the last of her books I read!
Nessie Carson is a real, believable heroine who will do anything to keep her family together. I enjoyed the Nuneaton setting - nice to see smaller Midlands towns represented in historical fiction! The family's new role live-in assistants to a local undertaker is emotional - how frightening for children -to say nothing of all the obstacles in the path to happiness.
It could be said that it is a cliché that Nessie overcomes the odds to make a go of her life, but somehow it isn't! Refreshingly written to really draw out the character. I want a sequel!!
