This is a heartwarming tale of love, and being able to overcome anything with the right spirit and attitude.
Nessie Carson is left in charge of her family when her mother is brutally murdered. Struggling to make ends meet when their only wage earner is injured and unable to work, Nessie accepts the offer of a job and accommodation at a funeral directors, and soon begins to make improvements to the business, and when she meets Dr Oliver Dorsey she falls in love. But their differing social status means they cannot be together...
Alongside this is the illness of her youngest brother, and worry about her sister who has gone to work in the big house, but ends up pregnant and out of work.
This is a story with lots of different threads all intertwined, and it really grabbed me and had me reading late into the night.
Set in the 19th Century, there is lots of social commentary but this does not get in the way of a heartwarming story of a strong female lead. Towards the end of the book there are a few shocks, and the paces increases to skips years at a time, but I really enjoyed it.
