As a product, Rosie Goodwin's novels are reliably good-hearted and generally wholesome. As a reading experience they have different settings and characters and plots woven into a fresh story each time. Even if the habitual reader can often predict the outcome, this doesn't spoil the experience of watching the story unfold and all the pieces slot together. And the writer sometimes teases by setting a false trail and then overturning the stereotype.

It's an especial pleasure to read a story with so many strong women featured; ones who are enterprising and know their own minds. I can see this story appealing to a huge spectrum of adult readers who have an interest in the life of ordinary people in provincial England in the 1860s.
