A lovely, heartwarming saga novel. I read it in virtually one sitting as I had to find out what happened to Nessie and her lovely family.
Set in the 1800s in Nuneaton, life for Nessie and her family is hard, they are desperate for money and work after their father leaves them and their mother is subsequently murdered. The reader really warms to Nessie, a kind natured charitable girl who puts her family above all else.
As time progresses their luck does change and Nessie and her brother pursue a career in a funeral parlor, which works our rather nicely for them all.
However, devastation is never far from the plot and there are twists and turns right until the end, where deliciously Karma makes sure that those who give so much are eventually given back to.
