The themes in this novel are timeless. The importance of family and the difficult relationships within families. The inevitability of death in all its forms. And poverty. Of course in Nuneaton during the 1900's life was much more harsher and after the death of their mother poor Nessie and her brother Reuben find themselves growing up a lot faster than they had planned. They are both brave, resilient and especially in Nessie's case determined. They manage with the local doctor's support to get themselves decent jobs and for a time life is better than bearable. But their little sister lacks the same drive and has ambitions of her own.
There is also a murderer on the loose adding tension and suspense.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading The Blessed Child. It is the first time I have read a book by Rosie Goodwin and I wholeheartedly recommend it.
